Africa Cup of Nations 2013: Day 12 Scores and Results Summary

The final two spots in the quarterfinals have been claimed in the Africa Cup of Nations, and its Ivory Coast and Togo moving on.

Actually, Ivory Coast had already clinched the top spot in the group, so Wednesday's 2-2 tie against Algeria was meaningless for the Ivorians. They will meet Nigeria in the quarters.

But the match between Togo and Tunisia was for all the marbles, as the two teams came into the game tied with three points. Togo would be tested, but would hold off Tunisia and draw, 1-1, enough for Togo to advance. They now face Burkina Faso.

This game may have been meaningless, but it sure was fun. And Ivory Coast at least came out with some firepower, starting Didier Drogba.

But it would be Algeria who earned the first chance, as Ismael Traore would bring down Hilal Soudani right on the edge of the box, earning the Algerians a penalty kick. Ryad Boudebouz failed to capitalize, however, hitting the woodwork with his shot.

Sofiane Feghouli would put Algeria ahead on a penalty in the 64th minute, while Hilal Soudani would give the Algerians a two-goal lead after he headed home a Feghouli cross in the 70th minute.

But Ivory Coast would strike back, as a Drogba header in the 77th minute would cut the lead in half before Wilfried Bony ripped a 25-yard strike in the 82nd and level the game at two goals apiece.

Togo needed only to draw to advance, a tall task against a tough Tunisia side. And while Tunisia would make things uncomfortable in the end, Togo would survive.

Togo was the superior team early. Emmanuel Adebayor missed a chance at goal early he really should have buried, but he would make up for it with a brilliant through ball to teammate Serge Gakpe who would find the netting for the game's first goal in the 13th minute.

Despite Togo's superior chances early in the game, Tunisia would get the equalizer in the 30th minute off the foot of Khaled Mouelhi. Suddenly, Tunisia was right back in the game.

But Tunisia simply couldn't find that second goal in the second half, with Togo holding on for dear life at times. Adebayor would be a thorn in the team's side, hitting the woodwork once in the second half and nearly earning a penalty kick as well.

Tunisia, however, would earn a penalty with a golden opportunity to take the lead. It wasn't to be for the side on this afternoon, however, as Khaled Mouelhi's attempt hit the post. That would be the best chance Tunisia would get the rest of the way, and their tournament was over.
