(getting through to reviews from my playing notes and photographs) Carlton Glen Tennis ClubCarleton, MI Grade: C+Teacheras Comments: An agreeable program, but conditions were lacking. Carlton Glen is a neighborhood favorite for more than fifty years. It's a satisfying course, with a nice mix of challenging and simple holes. On the afternoon I visited (summertime 2011), but, tee boxes and fairways weren't in the very best situation. The vegetables, on one other hand, were well kept and a joy to putt on. The front nine of this 6,500 yard par 71 program is open and simple. A bogey golfer must be in a position to score well with this standard back-and-forth design. The majority of the holes are spacious and relatively free of risk. Probably the most demanding could be the 327 yard par 4 fifth, that includes a creek running over the fairway at about 200 yards out. The creek then takes a right turn and uses the left side of the gap to the green. As a result of the direction of the tee box, trees right and the trees and creek left, a risk is taken by players in wanting to drive on the creek and surrounding hard. I can state from experience that getting hung up in trees is just a real risk. Better with this opening to set as much as the relatively wide fairway facing the creek. I found the back nine more interesting. It offers some more exciting level changes, and is a little more wooded. It is also somewhat longer. The par 5 eighteenth is just a 547 garden monster. A distinctive characteristic of Carleton Glen is the cemetery positioned in the center of the program. Carleton Glen even offers among the most useful looking clubhouses Iave seen. It is constructed from the basement of a vintage barn and has large glass windows to see the 9th green. Carleton Glen is just a fun, but basic class that is worth if you are already in the neighborhood playing. Itad be perfect for an outing. It is not, however, the one that Iad walk out my way to visit A couple more photos follow: .
