Premier League weekend preview: Manchester United might be topped... - The Independent

Some edges may still have six games to play in the Premier League this year - but much could be resolved in this weekend's round of accessories. While at the other end of the table there may be just one outstanding berth in the underside three to be resolved Birmingham City may be legally disposed of their overhead. Here, we take a peek at the mixtures for the top and bottom of the table, as well as the battle for the top-five and European soccer next time. THE TITLE... This weekend, Manchester United host Aston Villa and Birmingham City happen to be Tottenham. It's the reigning champions who perform first, with a tough job at White Hart Lane on Sunday lunchtime. Should Roberto Mancini's side lose to top-four pursuing Spurs - United might be topped winners the following night. Sir Alex Ferguson's men play relegation confronted Aston Apartment at Old Trafford on Saturday. If City have lost, and United win, the Red Devils will be celebrating their 20th league title. RELEGATION... Both Reading and QPR - that are presently 10 points adrift of protection - may see their expectations of success extinguished this weekend. However, things would really need to go against the beleaguered edges. QPR number Stoke at Loftus Road and Reading play at Carrow Road against Norwich - both sides will have to lose if they are to be directed this weekend. They'd then have to observe some great effects from their other relegation challengers. Sunderland would need to defeat Champions League pursuing Everton at the Stadium of Light and Newcastle would need at least a place away against West Brom. While these answers are not out of the question, relegation could only be made if Aston Villa left Old Trafford with all three points when they play Manchester United on Monday morning. EUROPEAN FOOTBALL... While they may mathematically have a chance of winning the title, for Manchester City the league is all about European diploma now. Victory for them at Tottenham this weekend could get them to 71 points, an amount which is unobtainable by sixth put Everton whenever they fall any points between now and the end of the growing season. Should City get and Everton don't get all three factors absent at Sunderland this weekend, City will rest assured of at least a Europa League position - although Champions League certification will be just around the corner for the Sky Blues. No other side can assure European baseball this week-end, while a gain for Tottenham could leave only Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs, Everton, Liverpool and West Brom with a mathematical possibility. That weekend's Premier League fixtures... Thursday Fulham v Arsenal 15:00 Norwich v Reading 15:00 QPR v Stoke 15:00 Sunderland v Everton 15:00 Swansea v Southampton 15:00 West Brom v Newcastle 15:00 West Ham v Wigan 15:00 Wednesday Tottenham v Manchester City 13:30 Liverpool v Chelsea 16:00 Monday Manchester United v Aston Apartment 20:00
