Jets Reportedly Plan to Force Darrelle Revis to Participate in Voluntary Workout

The New York Jets are playing hardball with star cornerback Darrelle Revis, reportedly demanding he show up for the team's voluntary offseason conditioning program on April 15.

Even though they may trade him before or during the April 25 draft, the Jets plan to enforce language in the star cornerback's contract that requires him to participate in the voluntary workouts to collect bonus money, sources said.

Revis is due to collect a $3 million in workout bonuses, but he won't earn that money unless he shows up on April 15, according to Cimini's report.

Revis is still recovering from the ACL injury that forced him to miss last season. He has been rehabbing in Arizona, and according to Cimini's report, he'd rather stay in Arizona than travel to New York in April.

Given the way the Jets have been trying to trade Revis, his attendance at the team's conditioning workouts may end up being more of a distraction than anything else.

The latest trade rumors regarding Revis involve the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, though talks between the Jets and Bucs have gone cold recently.

SI.com's Peter King recently gave his opinion on the matter, writing on March 25, "I believe he'll go to Tampa Bay for two high draft choices sometime before draft day."

Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune also believes the Bucs will end up making a deal for Revis before the draft, writing:

Talk of a Revis trade to the Bucs has cooled to a simmer, but it will heat up again as the draft approaches, and so might the Bucs' interest in dealing their 2013 first-round pick for the Jets cornerback.

If it were up to Jets head coach Rex Ryan, Revis wouldn't go anywhere, but Ryan isn't the one making personnel decisions for the club.

Revis is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2013 season, and per Cimini's report, the team can't use the franchise tag on him to keep him on its roster in 2014.

Owner Woody Johnson is reportedly "categorically against" extending Revis' contract this year (per SI.com's King), and it seems inevitable that Revis will be playing for another team either in 2013 or 2014.

New general manager John Idzik is doing all he can do to try to get something in return for one of the NFL's best players, but it won't be easy brokering a deal that benefits the Jets.

This story is far from over. This latest power play is just one more step toward what seems like an inevitable divorce between Revis and the Jets.
