Determining Orb's Pedigree and Possibilities for 2013 Preakness

With the first leg of the 2013 Triple Crown in the books, it's now time for all of us to turn our attention to the next renowned competition on the schedule, that will be the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore, Md. As often, a lot of the interest will soon be based upon whether the success of the Kentucky Derby has what it takes to gain two Triple Crown races in a line, establishing a potential Triple Crown brush at the Belmont Stakes in June. Orb, this year's success at Churchill Downs, entered the Kentucky Derby as the favorite and will certainly check out the Preakness in the same position, particularly because of the way in which he captured the top in Louisville. In the Derby, Orb's late surge vaulted him past Revolutionary and Normandy Invasion in the final quarter of the battle, and he managed to postpone a Golden Soul by two-and-a-half lengths to clinch victory. A product ofAStuart S. Janney, III and Phipps Stable, Orb showed the first Derby access for Janney, who also now owns the winner of the 139th running of the ancient race. It will not come as any surprise that Orb came away with this kind of exclusive gain, despite his owner's lack of Triple Crown success, given his impressive reputation. The son of Malibu Moon, a fruitful racehorse in his own right, and Lady Liberty, Orb's natural strength and innate power to find another gear once the competition is starting to tire bode well for his chances on any course. However it could be that his real gifts are ideal for 1 1/4-mile events including the Derby. With some of former high-profile horses in his gene pool, Orb was developed with the actual resources to be good, nevertheless now he is which may be the best of the group. At the Preakness, a faster race, jockey Joel Rosario won't find a way to let Orb relax for so long because he'll run out of space a lot more quickly, that is important when contemplating how late he made his go on to pass the pack of leaders. But Orb's natural explosiveness was on display from the last bend on, as he accelerated through the ultimate turn and blew past the opposition effectively. Clearly, it's way too soon to correctly predict just what the chances for the industry may be at the Preakness, but applying recent history as a point of reference, Orb should be the overwhelming favorite. A year ago, I will Have Another grabbed the concept in Louisville, setting herself as much as be a 5-2 favorite heading to the Preakness (via OddsShark). But, the difference is I will Have Another joined the 2012 Kentucky Derby with a shot at winning, so he wasn't even near being one of the agreement challengers. With that in your mind, would it not really be that unimaginable for Orb to be placed as a favorite for the Preakness, also on a smaller track? Simply put, no, because as Orb confirmed on Saturday in Usain Bolt-like style, he did not must be the quickest out of the blocks because he could shut almost any gap with a burst of speed.
